Sir Edric's Kingdom - out 22 September

9/5/2017

Hey, kids.

I haven't been updating this blog quite as often as usual but there's a very good reason for that, namely that I've been working hard. And, because of that, my next book, Sir Edric's Kingdom, is out 22 September, just a few months after Traitor's Prize.

It's the latest tale of Sir Edric's assorted misadventures and misdemeanours, as fate thrusts him into the stewardship of the kingdom when King Lawrence is poisoned. Beset on all sides by murderers and monsters, assassins and invasions, he'll need his wits about him. Fortunately, Sir Edric can count on his allies: Dog, the world's trustiest manservant, Orff No-Balsac, the man-eating slaver, Corkwell, Sir Edric's feisty paramour, and the elven enchantress Lysandra. But will Sir Edric be able to keep the kingdom, and himself, in one piece?

It's a cracking tale of daftness and manly heroics, drunkenness and deviousness. It's also just $0.99 until 29 September, so snap it up. Or wait a bit, and give me some more cash. Either's fine.

Traitor's Prize - out today, discounted until 5 August

7/28/2017

As the title subtly suggests, Traitor's Prize, the sequel to Kingdom Asunder, is out today. Not only that, it's just 60% of the normal price until 5 August. And, if you haven't yet enjoyed Kingdom Asunder, that's slashed to $0.99 until 5 August.

So if epic and dark fantasy is your cup of tea, if you like medieval bloodshed, treachery and political conniving, you can get just under 200,000 words for less than half the price of a cinema ticket (and no adverts to annoy you for the first half hour).

Traitor's Prize available for pre-order

7/15/2017

In delightful news, Traitor's Prize has a release date (28 July) and is available for pre-order at numerous online outlets, including (but not limited to):
Amazon UK
Amazon US

Smashwords
Kobo
Barnes and Noble

Traitor's Prize is the sequel to Kingdom Asunder, and the middle book of The Bloody Crown Trilogy. It continues immediately on from the events of the first book. Speaking of which, if you like your fantasy grim and treacherous, bloody and sly, but don't yet own Kingdom Asunder, now is the perfect time to buy it. KA is discounted to a measly 0.99c until 28 July.

Similarly, Traitor's Prize is discounted to $2.99 for the pre-order period and the first week of release, so don't dilly-dally.

It's not even out yet but I know readers wonder about future releases in a series. Crown of Blood, the third book, will be out probably early 2018. I've done a few early drafts. The first 85% story-wise is almost entirely nailed down, the last 15% needs work. Other than that, it's donkey work, sharpening the language, maintaining continuity and cutting out errors.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy Traitor's Prize, and if you're a reviewer interested in an ARC, just give me a bell (either here or @MorrisF1 on Twitter).

Two books on the 2017 horizon

Good news! I'm hoping that two of my books (both novels) will be released later this year.

Traitor's Prize, the sequel to five star fantasy Kingdom Asunder, will hopefully come out in the next month or two. It's the middle book of The Bloody Crown trilogy, and sees one or two old friends from previous books enter the civil war between William Penmere and John Esden. There's lashings of political scheming, battlefield cunning, and the dark arts, and sets up the final book rather nicely.

Sir Edric's Kingdom is a novel-sized comedy, a little larger than the previous book, available here, following the titular knight as he struggles to hold together the kingdom, aided by Dog, the world's trustiest manservant, Orff, the man-eating slaver, Corkwell, his dominatrix paramour, and Lysandra, the elven sorceress. Duels, monsters, invasions and dangerously high quantities of alcohol abound within.

I don't have any firm dates just yet, and obviously I won't be releasing them right next to each other. There'll probably be a month or two from one to the next (assuming all goes well).

Further ahead, I plan on working on Crown of Blood, the final part of the trilogy, and releasing Sir Edric and the Plague (another novel) which is essentially finished. I hope to write more of Wandering Phoenix and Roaming Tiger, perhaps with larger instalments. The first part's free, so if you haven't checked it out, give it a look.

Wandering Phoenix and Roaming Tiger - out now (free)!

Robin Hood meets Ancient China in new, action-packed fantasy serial Wandering Phoenix and Roaming Tiger. Follow the adventures of the title characters, their trusty friends and vengeful enemies as they battle oppressive rulers and fight for their freedom.

Even better, the first episode is absolutely free, so you can try and see if you like the style without parting with a penny.

Episodes 2 and 3 have been written and will be submitted for release (probably have a pre-order period of a week or 10 days between them, something like that) shortly. I plan on putting in episode 2 later today, so if you like episode 1, the next part will be available very soon.

Serial Soon, Novel Near

Wandering Phoenix and Roaming Tiger should be out within a couple of weeks, perhaps just one. Unfortunately getting price-matched (to make the first episode free, is a minor faff on Amazon, so I can't be more precise on timing.

The first part, as mentioned, will be free and is quite dinky to allow readers to see if the story and style is for them. It's a fast-paced, action-packed story of heroism and treachery, gallant outlaws and oppressive rulers. Episodes two and three will be put up for pre-order once the first episode is free, and are both considerably larger.

The cover is up on the Artwork tab of this site, and on my main/rambly blog.

Always hard to tell how new things will go down, and this is a considerable departure for me in some ways. There's humour, as usual, but it's very direct, strongly influenced by the writing style of Three Kingdoms and Outlaws of the Marsh. The setting's entirely new too (a mythologised version of Ancient China), and it's a bit less grim than some of my other fantasy.

Looking slightly further ahead, I'm aspiring to a June/July release for Traitor's Prize, but there's still work to do so I'll update nearer the time regarding publication. This is considerably sooner than I'd initially planned, though (the pencilled-in release date was a year after Kingdom Asunder, so November/December) so even a small delay still means it's coming out months in advance of the anticipated release date.

So, keep your eyes peeled. There'll be a free taster of Wandering Phoenix and Roaming Tiger soon, two more episodes to come, and then the middle part of The Bloody Crown Trilogy.

A delicious Chinese serial, out soon

Hey, kids.

Perhaps a little left-field, but I have two cunning new projects I hope to have released within the next month or two. One I'm keeping schtum about (it's something entirely different), and the other is a serial. The first part will definitely be free, to help garner interest, and I haven't quite decided how to cut up the other chapters into reasonable sizes. The total, right now, is about 27-30,000 words.

It's a sort of Chinese classic meets Robin Hood adventure story, called Wandering Phoenix and Roaming Tiger. Lots of action, a fast pace, and heroic/nefarious characters. Should be a lot of fun.

It's quite a different style for me, the closest equivalent would be Sir Edric, but this has more heroism and less humour (although there are still some nice one-liners).

I'm hoping to do at least a little artwork for it to help promotion, and I also need to do a slight redraft, as well as sort out for certain just how I'm going to chop it up. The ending is open, so if sales suffice I can keep going in serial format with no problem.

So, keep your eyes peeled. Wandering Phoenix and Roaming Tiger will be soaring through the skies and prowling through the jungles soon enough.

Progress report, and a look ahead

2/26/2017

With the paperback of Kingdom Asunder and Journeys both out, a few of the spinning plates have been removed from their poles, but there's plenty more to come this year.

I've been working on a serial, largely inspired by Outlaws of the Marsh, and Robin Hood. At the current rate of progress, it may be released around April-May (does depend if other short story opportunities arise in the meantime). At the moment, I'm planning on writing about nine chapters, which may well be released in just three or four parts to prevent the instalments being ridiculously small.

Serials are notorious for not working that well, but I'm finding this hugely enjoyable and the total time spent isn't that large. If the short narrative works well enough, I can continue (the 'ending' is open) with the serial approach. If not, the option is there to continue the story with a novel, or novella.

Traitor's Prize, the sequel to Kingdom Asunder,  is being redrafted, but the core of the story is sound so nothing dramatic should happen. Giving a date is not possible because I still need some other things to happen before it's viable. I am, however, hoping to bring it forward substantially from the planned December, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

The trilogy's third and final part is undergoing a major redraft. Most of that is adding new parts for continuity/story-balance but I am changing bits and pieces too. A problem with deliberately writing a story with many viable endings is that it can be tricky to decide which one is best. On the plus side, I'm very happy with a late plot twist.

I've not worked much on Sir Edric's shenanigans lately. A finished novel, Sir Edric's Kingdom, is on the shelf for now, but I will update when a release date is in mind. Sir Edric and the Plague is another novel, in need of minor redrafting (but with the trilogy and serial I haven't had the time).

As well as these projects, I'm also keeping an eye out for short story submission windows for anthologies, so hopefully there'll be a few more of those to come too.

Two discounts, KA and Journeys for 99p

1/24/2017

For perhaps the last time before Traitor's Prize is ready for pre-release, Kingdom Asunder is discounted (for Saint Francis' Day, and a little while after). It's just 99p, from today until the 27th.

So, if you're one of the surprisingly large number who snapped up the free abridged edition, now is the perfect time to buy Kingdom Asunder.

Journeys, the fantasy anthology featuring stories by Adrian Tchaikovsky, Julia Knight and John Gwynne (and me), comes out on 15 February. But if you pre-order it's just 99p. Stonkingly good value for a book crammed with excellent authors.

So, there you have it. Two cracking books for less than the cost of a coffee.

2017 - things on the horizon

1/11/2017

For whatever reason, it feels like the year's been around quite a bit. Maybe it's due to being oddly productive.

In the next couple of months there should be three Things on the horizon. In mid-February (slightly delayed, but only by a fortnight or so) is Journeys. It's a fantasy anthology featuring the short story Black Sails, by me (and also stories by Adrian Tchaikovsky, Julia Knight, et al).

Before then, I'm hoping to get the paperback of Kingdom Asunder sorted. There can be delays with this sort of thing (formatting for a hard copy can be trickier than for an e-book, and you need to actually get and check the copy in the flesh, which can take a while). I do plan to include, as per a reader suggestion, some family trees for the Houses of Penmere and Esden. No idea on pricing, but the way things work mean it'll probably be heftier than I'd like (back when I had Temple as both an e-book and paperback, the paperback was $8.99 or so, the e-book $2.99, and I made more per sale for the e-book).

There is good news for January, as it's Saint Francis' Day on the 24th. So, there shall be a sale. Oh yes. There shall be a sale. So, keep your eyes peeled and your ears pricked.

The Abridged (and free) edition of Kingdom Asunder is shifting far better than I expected. Obviously, I'd prefer the full edition to be the one making the running, but hopefully this'll still help when Traitor's Prize rolls around (planned for later this year). In a bid to avoid starvation and death, I'm also going to try broadening my writing.

In the meantime, if you haven't already do check out Kingdom Asunder. It's a damned good medieval fantasy.
