Getting there

Making a bit of progress now, and, most pleasingly, I think I might have a way of inserting a small bit of storyline which fits the main story perfectly but which was giving me some problems. I will have to write a new section, but I don't think it'll need to be too big and should work well (hopefully).

On the downside I'm wondering whether another new bit (again, not a huge piece of writing and less relevant to the main story than the above) will work. It's confined to the latter parts of the book and won't be hard to improve or axe as is necessary.

I had thought significant rejigging of the chapters would be necessary, but, with one possible exception, they actually stack up quite nicely. That one chapter will need chopping up probably at least into two, with some bits axed and others expanded, but it shouldn't be too much work.

That's largely it, as far as the to-do list goes. Oh, and I need to slightly amend the map (mostly changing lettering). Once all that's done I'll put it through one more major redraft, get anything ship-shape and then put it through a minor redraft (hunting for typos, basically).

Still very much hoping to get it released in the first half of 2013, though the precise timing remains too far off to try and predict.

Progress and lack thereof

I made a good start on several new pieces in early January, with which I'm pretty pleased. However, in the last week or so my productivity has declined somewhat, I must admit. Yesterday I got cracking with a new scene (well, it's more of an add-on to an existing one) and it was good to get some more fresh writing done.

I've still got a couple of big jobs ahead, the largest of which is rejigging the chapters. At present there are 20 and when the book's done that would equate to roughly 5k each, which is too long, I think. So, I'm going to shift most of the chapter start points around. Happily, the main storyline is entire in the right order so it's just a question of where the guillotine falls. However, a few secondary storyline bits and pieces may need moving about. I also expect this to throw up the odd continuity error and some redrafting will be necessary just to ensure the start and end of chapters/scenes don't jar.

I've also got a new review, from the lovely Boom Baby (a fine reviewer of books and not a terrorist toddler, I hasten to add). You can read the 4/5 review here.

In addition, Bane of Souls is also the Indie Book Club Book of the Month over at Goodreads. A discussion thread about it can be found here.

Marketing Stuff

With Bane of Souls, I've learnt a few things about matters peripheral to actual writing. I fluked my way to a great artist and cover, and also cocked up a few areas.

The largest of these is marketing. Now, if you read that word and immediately felt the dread coiling like a python of tedium then you had the same reaction as me.

I actually started writing Journey to Altmortis a month or two before Bane of Souls came out. This wasn't a cunning plan, I'd just left the cover art to the end and had nothing else to do... or so I thought.

What I should've been doing is trying to get interviews and reviews to promote the book. How well that would've worked I don't know, but it can only have helped. For a self-published chap, even one who writes characters as delightful as Captain Urquhart, the first and probably biggest hurdle to overcome is getting noticed at all.

But I didn't do that. I did get some reviews, all 4*, on Amazon, and really enjoyed reading what people thought. A more concerted effort to get reviews on blogs and other sites would've helped, the question is only how much or how little.

Anyway, my plan at the moment is, after Altmortis is out, to try and spend a few weeks at least promoting it with interviews and reviews and so forth. With luck, there'll also be a chain effect, with people who enjoy Altmortis then going on to buy Bane of Souls.

Speaking of which, I've done two more interviews, which can be found at the below addresses:

Thanks to both Mr. Dorset and Mr. Pinkney.

As for writing, I'm still working through the to-do list for the present redraft, but the largest individual bits of new material have all been writing. 3 out of 4 work well and I've slotted them into the 20 chapters, but the 4th seems a little off.

    About Me
    I've always loved reading
and writing, particularly fantasy and classical history. I'm also quite into F1 and politics and have no idea why this section is double-spaced.
