Bane of Souls out at Barnes & Noble

Bane of Souls has come out as a Nook Book at Barnes & Noble. That leaves just Sony and Blio (Baker & Taylor) to go.

I've slowly been getting back into the swing of writing (always takes me a while when I've spent ages redrafting or, in this case, doing all the boring formatting stuff). Pretty happy with the last major characters, whose introduction I've just written.

"I've slowly been getting back into the swing of writing ..."

Get on with it, man! Stop whinging. Bane of Souls was a really good read but it left a lot of things up in the air for characters you made me care about and I want to know how they develop.

Oh, and if you tell me the next book is not a continuation of the BoS story, I shall travel to where you are and rip your throat out.

Uh oh....

Well, it sort of is. It doesn't go on with the main characters (well, maybe one) of Bane of Souls. That said, most of the major characters (excepting two) did feature in Bane of Souls. Can't recall how much I've said previously, but the main focus is on Thaddeus and Fritigern.

The trilogy (due after Altmortis, though I'm toying with the idea of a free short story in between the two) will be all about the civil war in Denland (overlaps partially with the BoS storyline).

I've not quite been hitting full-pace writing (for me that's 1,500 words a day with perhaps one day off for every 5-6 on) but I'm getting there.

".. main focus is on Thaddeus and Fritigern" I thought it might be; good choice, but what happens to Horst? Hopefully you'll come back to him later, ditto some of the ladies (loved Thaddeus's sister) not to mention the, almost, good Captain Urquhart. A big strength of the Bane of Souls for me was the characterisation (well along with the plot and the unexpected moments of real comedy and the pace and Dragon on the door and the doggies). I'd like to know more about them and how their lives panned out.

Fifteen hundred words a day? Well, each to their own but that does sound a little low. I usually reckon on 8 A4 pages a day, but that is after I have done, nearly, all my research and note making, so by the time I put finger to keyboard I have done all the hard work. That said I am not writing fantasy fiction so a direct comparison is probably not that valid.

A great friend of mine is a successful (well he lives in a very big house and drives a really nice big car) script-writer and he reckons if he can do one scene a day he is doing very well and that excludes all the time on story-boarding and such like - he also does multiple revisions which I don't. If ever you are down this way I'll introduce you.

Anyway, I wish you God speed and good luck in your endeavours. Just get on with it. You have a fan base now and you must keep your fans happy.

I do intend to come back to Horst in the future. One possibility is for a short free eBook sandwiched between Altmortis and the trilogy telling the story of his first lessons with spell-casting and things around that. If I don't do that it'll be a while before you see Horst in a major role again.

I'm glad you liked the characterisation. Urquhart was perhaps my favourite major character to write. I'm also pleased you liked the humour. Ages ago I wrote an unpublished piece of work but I spent so much time making it grim and gritty there weren't enough moments of levity and (especially as the plot revolves around murdering) I was determined not to make that mistake here.

Oh, and Thaddeus' sister is in Altmortis too.
